Swimming with Dolphins in the Bahamas

In 2003, a BBC programme received recommendations from 20,000 viewers to compile a list of 50 Things to Do Before You Die. Swimming with dolphins came out tops as the one thing most people wanted to do in their lifetime. BBC programme host Gabby Logan said: "I'm not surprised swimming with dolphins is top. It takes some beating."

8th - 18th July 2008

Booked

Have you ever dreamt of swimming with wild dolphins? Put together your own group of 6 to 8 people and we will make it possible. Most of us have seen or know what dolphins are, but not many of us have actually had the opportunity to swim with them in the wild. There are very few places in the world where wild dolphins actually welcome us to share their waters but the Bahamas is one of these places. Two of the species of dolphin most commonly found in the waters of the Bahamas are the spotted dolphins Stenella attenuata and common dolphins, Delphinus delphis.

Come and join us on board a 45ft sailing catamaran for an experience of a lifetime. You will be taken to an area where we know that large quantities of dolphins gather relatively close to the shores of Grand Bahama Island in The Bahamas. Here you will be able to observe, photograph, film and if the conditions allow, swim with these magnificent animals in the wild.

Your guides and crew will be 2 of the most experienced marine wild life and cetacean experts (as well as sailors), Rodrigo Olson and Nicolas Popov. Both Rodrigo and Nicolas have been extensively at sea for the past 25 years exploring, studying, photographing, filming and sailing the world over. Rodrigo is a professional Yacht Captain and an Oceanographer, and has been working on a Whale Research Expedition during recent years, studying the sperm whale in different oceans around the globe. Nicolas is a Marine Biologist and a native of The Bahamas. He is also the founder and leader of Island Expeditions, a sea school that specializes in teaching children about marine life, based in and around the Bahamas. They have also both worked in The Bahamas studying and filming the spotted dolphins, and better guides for an expedition like this would be hard to find.

Flights are extra and the price will include sharing a double cabin with shower and head. The cost of meals and drinks on board is shared between everyone. The boat will leave the morning after the arrival day and will normally return to the original pick-up harbour. Whilst out at sea, we will be actively looking for the dolphins most of the daylight hours, and anchoring at night. Although the main focus of the week will be the dolphins, there will also be many opportunities to anchor off small islands to snorkel and swim in the magnificent waters of the Bahamas.

What to bring - cool cotton clothes and a light jacket or jumper for the evenings on deck. Bring your own snorkeling equipment if you have it. Remember the strength of the sun and bring lots of sunblock and a hat.
