| DAR LALLA, ESSAOUIRA |
|
| |
|
The heavy, ancient wooden door of Dar Lalla gives no clues as to this property being one of Morocco’s most surprising houses. With its pure white interior, curved walls and organic shapes, this four-bedroom holiday villa with two sun terraces is both luxurious and playful. Classic 1960’s furniture combines with local materials to create a chic, tranquil retreat.
Whether you’re after a laid-back holiday, some of the world’s best windsurfing or a taste of Moroccan culture in a relaxed setting, Essaouria has it. Here, among the souks in the ancient Medina you’ll find a house which reflects the diversity and charm of this magical town in its own way. An organic modern living space has been moulded around ancient sandstone columns and Thuja wood ceilings. Then a mix of eclectic colourful lighting and furnishings has been added, mainly from the 1960's era.

Local Area Two and a half hours north from Agadir and west from Marrakech lies a dusty coastal town steeped in history and rich in culture. It is here that Orson Welles based his Othello, Jimi Hendrix found the inspiration for 'Castles In The Sand' and thousands of hippies have trodden a well worn trail.
This is the beautiful 18th Century fortified medina of Essaouira, a Moroccan port and fishing harbour on the North African Atlantic coast. Now Morocco's most favoured coastal town, it has managed to retain a laid-back timelessness rarely seen on the bustling streets of modern Morocco. Inside the pink ramparts is a blend of French-styled squares and whitewashed arches and avenues. This is a centre of arts, crafts and music and together with its fishing port and beautiful wide sandy beaches, Essaouira has become a much sought after destination. The food is delicious with fresh fish caught daily, the wind surfing is some of the best in the world, the beaches are stunning, the markets or souks are a joy and the relaxed cosmopolitan atmosphere makes Essaouira a great place for just about everyone.
Everything is in about ten minutes walking distance, and there are no cars allowed in the Medina. This is a wonderful town to stroll around, stopping every now and then in one of the many cafes for a delicious sweet mint tea or Moroccan coffee.
Directions Fly to Marrakech, where clients will be met by the owner's driver who will drive them directly to the villa. Transfer cost is 600 dirham each way (about £50) for a normal car and 1,200 dirham (about £100) for a people carrier. |

Testimonials
 | We had the trip of our lives---really it could not have been more perfect, the house was gorgeous, comfortable, such an inspiring sanctuary. We are already planning to return next year with our friends who were unable to join us. The car transitions were flawless, Rashid and Amina both wonderful people, really the whole thing couldn't have been improved in any way---it makes all other vacations pale by comparison. | | | May 2007 | | | | We had an amazing time in Essaouira ... and that is mostly attributed to Dar Lalla!! The thoughtful touches, beguiling and beautiful design features were thoroughly appreciated by all. Honestly one of the most unique and stunning places we have ever stayed ... it felt so welcoming and lived in, and yet nothing like any home any of us had ever lived in before. Kind of like living in the pages of Elle, but being so comfortable with the decor at the same time. We shall definitely be back to stay at Dar Lalla and look forward to it. | | | April 2008 | | | | Just wanted to say thanks again for our wonderful stay in Essaouria. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The villa was fantastic - stylish but homely, and I think it's great that you give a tour of the medina, the cleaner comes each day and also that you can have food cooked for you. It means that it is almost like having the best of both worlds of a villa and a hotel, and really means you get to experience the best of Essaouria. Amina is a brilliant cook and the chicken tagine she did was one of the best things we had. | | | September 2008 |
