Fornalutx not only has the advantage of being generally recognised as the prettiest village in Mallorca but is also an excellent point from which to explore the entire north west and, if you feel the need to travel farther, the rest of the island. There are four restaurants in the village, all within a couple of minute's walk and a Pizzeria. There is also an excellent small supermarket, post office and three bars. A couple of shops, two hairdressers and beauty salon.
The village is situated at the far end of the Soller valley, or, Valle de los Naranjos (Valley of the Oranges) and is dominated by the magnificent Sierra de Tramuntana, the mountain ridge which cuts a swathe across the island at this point.
From the Finca there are circular walks varying from 45 minutes to six hours - all with magnificent views of the dramatic scenery and glimpses into a rural life, dominated by the cultivation of citrus fruits, which has hardly changed through the centuries.
A 45 minute walk through citrus trees and olive groves brings you to the nearby town of Soller with its colourful food market, excellent clothes boutiques and one of the finest squares on the island. There are museums and buildings designed by pupils of Gaudi to admire, but you may just prefer to sit in the square, the Placa Constitucio, sipping a vino rosado and soaking up the atmosphere.
Your peace will be interrupted every half hour by the jangling and hooting of Soller's famous tramway, built in 1913. People leap put of its path as it crosses the centre of the square to take you to the sea at Puerto Soller in 15 minutes, for the princely sum of one euro. It must surely be the cheapest and best tourist attraction in Mallorca!
There are beaches and bars aplenty at the port together with many first class fish restaurants. Sample paella at the Restaurant Cas Pages on a balcony which overlooks the sea. Sit on a terrace directly above the fishing boats at Sa Llotja des Peix and order calamares a la plancha or "September fish". Take a dip at the "Repic" end of the bay where it tends to be quieter and from where you can hire a pedalo to help work off the effects of lunch.
With a car, the opportunities to explore are endless. The fashionable town and beach at Deia are only 20minutes drive away. The summer palace of the Archduke Luis Salvador is a further five minutes along the road which eventually takes you to Valdemossa and the convent where George Sands and Chopin once wintered in Mallorca.
Without a car, there is a regular train service (an antique train with mahogany fittings and narrow guage) which rattles and hoots its way to Palma in just over an hour.
ACTIVITIES
If you are looking for an activity holiday, Finca Fornalutx is ideally placed. You can walk or cycle from the Finca, go swimming, boating and diving from the nearest beach or a short drive will get you to birdwatching, horseriding and golf. Or, if you prefer a more leisurely pace, take the tram to the port or the train to Palma.
Walking
Finca Fornalutx is a favourite among walkers. From the Finca itself, there are circular walks ranging from 45 minutes to six hours in length. The shorter walks take you around the village, along the river or on the foothills of the mountains which faces the hotel. The more intrepid can explore the Sierra de Tramuntana range, circle the blue waters of Lake Cuber and reach the summits of Sa Rateta (3556 ft.) and L'Ofre (3580 ft.). Walking books, maps, and a drop off and pick up service can be provided for guests.
Mountain Biking
Finca Fornalutx is situated 200 meters above the Port of Soller, amongst the great peaks of the Sierra de Tramuntana. There are many well sign-posted mountain pathways in the area that offer the explorer a challenging and varied range of riding surfaces. Fast bridleways swoop past mountain lakes. Complex, rocky single-track twists steeply down through narrow valleys. At a lower level, long stretches of occasionally cobbled path wind through the many citrus groves and on into villages. Climb high in the morning, lunch on one of the many summits and descend in the heat of the afternoon sun.
Swimming
The beach at Puerto Soller is only 15 minutes' drive from Fornalutx. A wide, sandy beach and safe water (lifeguards on duty) provide an ideal family swimming venue. Pedaloes are also for hire. For those who like to be away from the crowds and more adventurous, head for the rugged coastline of Calle Tuent (a 45 minute drive) to pitch camp on the rocks and dive into the water from there. Or, hire a boat from Puerto Soller, drop the anchor and choose your own swimming spot. There is also an excellent outdoor public swimming pool in Soller (10 minutes).
Diving
The Octopus diving school in Soller offers scuba diving courses for beginners with instructers recognised by PADI (the Professional Association of Divers' Instructors). For intermediate and experienced divers, there are guided trips which take you to the dramatic and otherwise hidden network of hidden underwater caves which are feature of the Mallorquin coastline and the chance to view at close quarters barracuda and triton's trumpets.
Golf
The golfing opportunites have expanded hugely on the island of Mallorca over the last few years and the island now offers some of the finest golf courses in Europe. The island is becoming increasingly popular among all year round golfers wanting to escape the cold and rain sodden courses back in the UK. Closest to Fornalutx, we would recommend the 18 hole course at Bunyola which was opened in 1998. Not too far away are the oldest and most exclusive courses on the island, Son Vida (near Palma) and Real Golf de Bendinat.
Horse Riding
Within 20 minutes drive there is the Molina Centre of Horseriding. (Nick Guthrie, the British owner of the Finca, is a a keen rider and can vouch for the excellence of the horses and of the instruction!). It offers lessons, short hacks and all day excursions to some of the prettiest villages in the interior of the island with a stop at a restaurant for lunch.
Boating
Stroll along the front at Puerto Soller and admire the yachts moored there from all over the world and you will appreciate the international fame of the port's natural harbour. Sailing boats and windsurfing equipment can be hired from the Centro Nautico Port de Soller and speed boats can be hired for the half day or a full day to explore the coastline up to Formentor in the north or down to Deia. Ferry boats leave the port twice daily for Formentor, Sa Calobra and Deia.
Train to Palma
Fancy a day shopping in one of the most elegant cities in Spain? Or, a day's sightseeing to see the ancient cathedral and the excellent museums and art galleries? There is no need to drive or take a taxi. The little wooden, single gauge railway was opened in 1912 to link Soller to the capital and has been running ever since, up to eight times a day during the high season. For keen photographers, there are two special "panoramic" rides a day which allow you to get out and take photographs of the Soller valley. A journey into the past and great views – all for 2.50 euros each way. The evening return train from Palma gets you back in time to sample the tapas bars and restaurants of Soller.
Tram ride to the Port
Constructed in 1913, the tramway from the town of Soller to the Port is one of the most charming (and cheapest!) tourist attractions in the area. For only one euro, you can board one of the little wooden carriages at the stop just outside the train station in Soller for the 20 minute ride. The tram rattles and hoots its way through orange and lemon groves and then turns right along the shore of Puerto Soller for great views of the sandy beach and attractive harbour with its collection of ferries, yachts and fishing boats. Stop here for a swim and lunch at one of the fish restaurants before taking the tram back. It goes every hour in winter; every half hour in summer.
Bird Watching
The reservoir at Cuber (20 minutes drive) is one of the best birdwatching spots on the island. Park the car by the dam, take out your binoculars and and you won't have to wait long to see Ospreys fishing in the reservoir. Look out for Spectacled Warblers, Tawny Pipits and Short-toed Larks. Rock thrushes breed in the small quarry beyond the dam where you might also see Eleonoras Falcon. The clusters of holm oaks on the surrounding hills provide shelter for Cili Buntings and, further up the mountain, you may see Black Vultures, Griffon Vultures and even a Bonelli's Eagle.
