| DAR TANGIER |
|
| |
|
Built in the 1930’s by a British architect, this beautiful five bedroom house and garden have been extensively restored and enlarged by his granddaughter, the present owner, to create a gorgeous holiday villa. Dar Tangier stands proudly on the Mountain with panoramic views of the city and Bay of Tangier and it combines the comfort of an English country house with Moroccan style and service.
This gorgeous house was built in the 1920’s and is situated on the “Mountain” with stunning views of the city and bay of Tangier beyond. The house was renovated and extended in 1998. The garden has been extensively restored and replanted. Many new paths and walls have been built, including a “Geriatric Cresta Run” which is a path all the way from the house to the pool at the bottom of the garden with no steps, therefore suitable for wheelchairs.
The property stands in its own extensive grounds two kilometres from the city of Tangier. Many subsequent stays by visitors are a testament to the wonderful holidays enjoyed in this personal family home.

Outside Facilities The very large garden is on the side of a hill, so it is all terraced, well balanced between sunny and shady places. It is watered by three natural springs, which ensure it is green and cool in even in the hottest time of the year. Midway between the house and the pool is a large Barbecue terrace, with a table that can seat twenty people. There is also a second BBQ by the pool. It has been extensively replanted, and had a lot of restoration work done. There are several new paths and all the dry stone retaining walls have been repaired or rebuilt.
There is a tower Folly – ideal for playing hide and seek, or sitting undisturbed with a good book. The garden is now probably the most exciting garden in Tangier – at least that is what the many visitors have said. Amongst the hundreds of plants (some of them very unusual) are hundreds of agapanthus, canna lilies, arum lilies, papyrus, bougainvillea, roses and wisteria.
Because of the spring water there are three “bassins” in the garden which conserve water; these are covered with water hyacinth, water lilies, and although very attractive are a hazard. They should be pointed out to you as soon as you arrive to avoid any danger. At the bottom of the garden is the large swimming pool and new pool house. The pool is not heated. In the pool house there are two changing rooms, a small kitchen, a loo and a shower. There are plans afoot to build a second barbecue which will make the perfect lunch spot in a sheltered terrace to the side of the pool house even more useful. The pool is looked after by the head gardener, Yassine. |
Services At Dar Tangier, you will be taken care of by a family who have been with the house since 1984. Abdul Latif will meet you at the airport, and look after with great care and attention until you leave. His sister is a first class Moroccan cook, (she can also do egg and chips if required) and his wife cleans and washes clothes. Abdul Latif speaks good English and his aim is to see that you have a wonderful holiday, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, when as a proud Moroccan he wants you to have only the happiest memories of his country.
Two gardeners look after the garden. Yassine is the head gardener and is responsible for the swimming pool. Yassine takes great delight in talking to visitors about anything in the garden.
There is a compulsory extra charge of 4,000 dirhams for the nine seater vehicle supplied for guests' use. Abdul Latif will meet you at the airport in it (he will arrange extra taxis if you are a large party). It is insured for you to drive yourself, or Abdul Latif can chauffeur you. Abdul Latif will do all your grocery shopping, unless you prefer to do it yourself. There is a landline for incoming calls, and a Moroccan mobile with a pay-as-you-go card for outgoing calls.
Local Area Tangier is two kilometres away. More raffish than Marrakech, it has a fascinating history. The Phoenicians, the Romans, the Portugese, the English have invaded it, and then in the 20th Century it was governed by an International government from the first world War until Morocco became independent in 1957. Although it has had all this outside influence, it has always kept its Moroccan heart. Doing the groceries is a real experience that we have lost in the West. There is a thriving European community, many restaurants, fantastic beach, golf and tennis. Artists and writers have always been attracted to Tangier, and this is no less true today than before. There are several galleries in Tangier where you can browse the local works.
Directions Atlas Blue, Royal Air Maroc and Air Arabia all fly direct from London to Tangier, or the ferries from Algeciras or Tarifa in Spain run very frequently. In either case, Abdul Latif will meet you. No one can ever find Dar Tangier without knowing the road. There are no signposts and it is very complicated.
